About Ma Yom

Located on Montrose’s bustling High Street, the ethos behind Ma Yom is tasty and comforting Thai cuisine, prepared with care and love – the way it should be.

While the building may date back to 1862 and retain many of its original features, the restaurant has a modern, vibrant atmosphere, perfect for a romantic dinner with your other half, a family celebration or even just a mid-week treat.

Tucked away to the back of the hotel, finding Ma Yom feels every bit like entering an illicit speakeasy and the cocktails suit the environment – crafted by expert bartenders using the best ingredients.

The restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 5pm to 9pm (10pm Fri/Sat) and we also offer a full takeaway menu – perfect for a Saturday night in!

Our Story

Ma Yom (Star Gooseberry or Starberry) is a sacred tree in Thailand. It is believed that planting this tree in your garden will result in your household receiving love and admiration from others.

Chef proprietor Ploy Mills grew up in Buri Ram, a province to the North-east of Thailand’s capital Bangkok and close to the border with Cambodia.

Learning from her mother, who ran a famous food stall in her hometown, she developed a passion for authentic, Thai cuisine. As one of four sisters, working with her mum, grandmother and aunts, they earned the nickname locally as the ‘happy family’.

When she married Gary and moved to Montrose, she had an ambition to bring fresh, authentic Thai cuisine to the town and since opening, Ma Yom has become a staple of the Angus culinary landscape - with a table here harder to secure than at some of our Michelin Star holding neighbours!

Authenticity is key for Ploy, who cooks using fresh local produce, paired with her own sauces and pastes she created alongside her sister who also runs a restaurant back home called the ‘Merry Clan’ – a play on the family nickname and a nod to Ploy’s newly laid Scottish roots.
